Amazing Spider-Man 2: Fan Reaction, Hypocrisy, & Super Cynicism

The trailer for Amazing Spider-Man 2 came out, and it looks great. But this blog isn’t a screencap rundown or a trailer review, because we got those all over the place. Nay, I want to address something that segues into something bigger that itself hints at something grander. Something, something, ya know? You know. You don’t? Well let’s start knowing, dammit! Today’s discussion is about the fan reaction to the trailer, fan bias/hypocrisy, and most importantly something I’m going to call “Super Cynicism”. First, the epic trailer in question:

Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2: A Primer (Part 2: The Next Phase)

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes eat for free.

In the last entry we went through the narrative and industry lead up to Marvel’s The Avengers. Marvel Studios made their movie, set up the pieces, and gave us a ride. The Avengers saved the world, Marvel and Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative proved successful in-universe and reality. But now what? Where do we go after the ‘New York Incident’? What is Phase Two? To convey how Marvel Studios is going to deal with this the first thing everybody needs to square with is how shared comic book universes work. Basically; we need to respect that heroes probably have each other on speed-dial, but won’t make any calls. This is essential, actually.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2: A Primer (Part 1: An Assembly)

In the last half decade something amazing happened, Marvelous even. Marvel Studios, with but a few of their own characters, made a gamble. What if their movie characters shared a cinematic universe, where they have every chance of meeting each other as they would in their printed adventures? While several of Marvel’s biggest characters made their beds in other movie studios (X-Men at Fox, Spidey and friends at Sony), could Marvel’s own studio pull off a shared universe on screen?

Sorry to Keep You…

It’s been many months, and more than a few games and movies this blog has followed have came out. I’m sorry to have left this thing to die for a while. But I’m back and writing and posting and being a general geek of geeks (albeit an amazingly dashing one). To kick off my return to blogging, let’s just get this out of the way:

  • Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is awesome.
  • Halo 4 is also awesome.
  • The Dark Knight Rises was incredible.
  • Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine in two freaking movies.
  • SHIELD, as seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting a show on ABC. Joss Whedon’s doing the pilot.
  • The Man of Steel trailer is moving, kick-ass.
  • The Iron Man 3 trailer epic, missing AC/DC, though.
  • I think I’m irrationally in love with WWE’s AJ Lee.
  • But still totally in love with Jessica Lucas.
  • …Who’s going to be all busted up in the Evil Dead remake. That trailer was hardcore.

That’s just some of the stuff I could have blogged about during the exile. Sorry for being neglectful. There’s some new stuff coming to this blog, some new series ideas to run here (hint, hint; if you’re one of those loudmouth comment monkeys on the internet, prepare to get put on blast). Until then, the next update will be Halo 4 related. Thanks for coming back, whoever’s reading this!
